There are many joyful holidays throughout the year. The one that I choose is Memorial Day. Many people celebrate it as the beginning of summer, with barbecues, out door fun and games. Swimming and boating.
I grew up in a small town in NJ. As far back as I can remember my Memorial Day weekend started with a Memorial Day Parade. As a Girl Scout I would march with my troop every year. My young heart swelled with pride when I saluted the flag and I would feel tingly all over with the singing the Star Spangled Banner.
The heart swelling and the tingling happen to this day. Now I live in a small town in rural Pennsylvania. Down the road apiece, the local American Legion has developed a small piece of property called Memorial Park. It is about an eighth of an acre. Veterans are honored with a brick with their name, rank and dates of service. I am honored to see my dad's brick.
I was proud of my dad. He served in WWII and made it home in one piece. Like many veterans, He did not talk much about the war. He was part of the Fifth Army. It is the only unit that was formed outside the USA. The Fifth Army was formed in North Africa and fought there way up Italy. He did mention seeing Pope Pius X. So they made it at least as far as Rome.
I am proud to be an American everyday. Memorial Day allows me a special time to be grateful for the sacrifices made by brave Americans.
I have seen a poster that says, "There are two people willing to die for you." The picture shows an American Serviceman and Jesus Christ. This gives me hope that, "this too shall pass."
