Oh, I am so jealous. I love hiking and extended visits with old friends. This sounds like the hike of a lifetime. Makes me want to visit New Zealand.
Your story does all that to me. Your descriptions are enticing and your legend addition completes the picture. You could be a travel writer. There's another of my suggestions for what you can do with your life.

My life is almost getting too busy doing things to stop and write about them!
If you ever get lucky enough to come to NZ I'll show you some beautiful places.

Yeah! This sounds like so much fun and adventurous to be sure! I have not been able to walk let alone hike in several years yet I would love to see the countryside with you! Being wheelchair-bound is a problem but I could muster up some chow and with your assistance, I could roll on up the mountainside! I hate to miss out on such a lovely yet treacherous landscape while avoiding the sandflies who would make our adventure miserable if we let them.
So what do you think? Should I pack my bags and meet you there at the start of the hike?
Haha, just kidding, of course, I would love to go with you but I will need to live vicariously through your writing when you return from your hike, good luck!
