Very amusing and you used the five words very well. Too bad he had the better hand, it seems. He certainly didn't win the grand prize. Best of luck in the 100-word contest.

Carol, thank you for the review.

So it is Betty the devil that you got? You took a gamble and she was your prize. Whew. I think you did a great job of incorporating the required words. Best wishes.

Thank you very much!
Comment from Gloria ....
A very well conceived and written entry into this contest. Of course I was thinking the Queen of Spades, but your surprise entry was so much better.
You have met the challenge with great aplomb and I wish you much luck with the voters. :))

Gloria, LOL, I love the Queen of Spades idea!

Oh dear! Brilliant piece of flash. Lady pirates were a thing, back in the day. There were Chinese ones, and also Anne Bonney and Mary something or other. This one seems worse than they were!

Great twist at the end. How true it is that sometimes when we think we are winners, we turn out to be losers. There are many lottery winners who have learnt that lesson!

Hahaha! It's obvious you would use all the required words, but the imaginative tale you wove is priceless. How long ago was this that a Frankie Laine song was on the radio. I hope you win the contest to make up for winning the card game. Well done.

Frankie song was probably in the late 1950s but is still played regularly on the oldies stations. Thank you for reading.

You did a great job with the story length and vocabulary provided. I loved the twist at the end - she was the devil! Thanks for sharing this here, and best wishes to you.

I can remember that statement, what we think is the most desirable thing can be hell in disguise as Heaven, unfortunately no man can see beyond their nose, perhaps just a bit further, beautifully written, blessings Roy

Hahaha! Should have listened to those who said she was the devil!
This was an entertaining read in only a few words. Good luck with this challenging contest - you've got a devil of an entry!

Someone has a great entry here, a story enhanced by the perfect picture. the characters come alive and there is the subdued smile in the ending. Sometimes when we win, we don't really know what we won! Still that feeling of winning is unsurpassed -- even when it turns out to be short-lived. I love it.
By the way, you may want to check out the spelling on Frankie Laine's name. I think it is an 'i'. Worth checking any way.
Good entry that checks all of the contest boxes. ann

Thank you for six stars and the catch on Mr. Laine's name. I thought it might appeal to the gamblers. The Unknown writer.
