Ciao , you now have seven votes!

Leland is a special child.

Children tend to be self-centred.

And living in an orphanage would have only made those children even more "selfish" having to " fight" for that little there was.

This is a great story, heartwarming and tender. Who could resist pouring love on such a child as Leland? Your descriptions are well done, just enough information to give the reader a mental picture. Blessings. Carol

A very sweet and wholesome flash fiction story with the 'perfect' ending. It is also timely, given the holiday season. I can see this one being a hit with more than the FanStory membership. Well done.

This is a beautiful story of two people who just wanted someone to love. No one is perfect but Mary Ann and Leland were perfect for ea h other. Beautifully written Carol. Cheers

Goodness that is a bit of a dark place.

This sentence was heartbreaking:
Mrs. Hendricks sniffed dismissively. "He's not worth even looking at. He's so scrawny the wind would blow him right off his feet."

Picturing Eastern Europe somewhere pre-modernization.

All children need a home.
Douglas.

What an adorable story, Carol! You know just how to touch our hearts with this beautifully constructed and written tale of adoption. The visual is heart-breaking per se so you had me from the start and I enjoyed every single word, particularly "the lingering scent of porridge" which, for me, summed up the dreary institutional atmosphere of this orphanage. Very well done, Carol! Take care Debbie

What a sweet, delightful story, your prolific writing is wonderful in every sense of the word Carol, they bring hope and a future in stories, I don't care if people like me or not, but I prefer to write poems with hope burnt into them, and I know that some depend on them, I write for their sake, and myself, because I know what pours from my heart, comes from somewhere that truly brings hope, and so do you, beautifully written, these would be great in a book of short stories, blessings Roy

Thanks, Roy! Yes, I would much rather dream of everyone having hope and inspiration in their lives, love that the Lord intended us to share, and dreams of better tomorrows. Thank you!

That was a lovely short story, Carol. I could already feel a strong bond developing between them and I'm sure this will blossom. I hope you return to these characters again, I enjoyed reading it.

Well, Carol, this touched my heart no end. How could it not? I spent the first 2 and a half years of my life in an orphanage until I was chosen and got adopted. I have no more words, only tears of joy for the wee boy. Hugs, Ulla xxx

As I've said many times, I'm the old softy, but don't tell anyone and spoil my image, who is a big sucker for happy endings. Smiling beats the heck out of crying. Thanks for sharing.
